It is with much regret we report that Master Maddams (Patrick Maddams Hon FRIBA), former Sub-Treasurer of The Inner Temple, sadly died yesterday, Sunday 23 October, aged 71. The Inn’s flag will fly at half-mast in his memory on Tuesday 25 October 2022.
Master Patrick Maddams
Master Maddams graduated in 1972 with a degree in Economics and Geography from the University of Leeds and started his career in the 1970s at the Standard Chartered Bank in its Economic Research Department, with spells in Italy, Ghana and Nigeria. Subsequently, he joined the international Blue Funnel Shipping Line in Liverpool. He served on the board of the Royal Institute of British Architects for six years, where he acted as a non-executive Director and was qualified to validate University Faculties of Architecture. He was awarded an Honorary Fellowship in 2007. Before joining the Inn as Sub-Treasurer in 2005, Master Maddams was Partnership Secretary at DAC Beachcroft.
During his 12 year tenure, Master Maddams took an active involvement in all of the Inn’s work, attended every meeting and event that his diary allowed and had an enthusiasm for just about everything that crossed his desk. He had an excellent memory, and would often recite quotes, poetry, songs and speeches without notes. He was involved in numerous special projects at the Inn, including bringing to a satisfactory conclusion the re-development of Serjeants’ Inn and securing the contract with Apex Hotels Ltd; The Inner Temple Book Prize; public celebrations for our 400th Royal Charter anniversary; negotiating the use of the Inn by the Belgian National Olympic Committee during the Olympics in 2012; the Magna Carta 800th anniversary celebrations; the instigation of the Malaysian Inner Temple Alumni Association (MITAA); and the Project Pegasus education and training facilities (which he was able to witness come to fruition earlier this year). Alongside his varied activities – ranging from day-to-day management of the Inn’s staff, educational programmes, the estate and oversight of finances – Master Maddams acted as Secretary to the Executive Committee, Bench Table, the Bencher Nomination Committee, the Project Pegasus Steering Group, the 2022 Advisory Group and, formerly, the Choir Committee. He was also for a time the Secretary to the Council of the Inns of Court.
Master Maddams had a keen interest in both the liturgical and musical life of the Inn and the Temple Church. He supported and encouraged opportunities for the Choir to travel further afield to Singapore, Australia, Germany and the US to give performances and was a regular attender at services and Temple Music Foundation concerts. Earlier this month, he sponsored a performance of Bach Cello Suites at the Temple Church, which he was able to view through a specially arranged live stream. He was actively involved with a number of musical education foundations, including the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College of Organists and the Hackney Music Development Trust. His own favourite composer was Mozart, and his favourite opera, Don Giovanni.
He also took a very active role in (and thoroughly enjoyed) enhancing the Inn’s continuing and developing international relationships. He welcomed judges, lawyers, diplomats and government officials from Kazakhstan, China, Ghana, Qatar, Pakistan, the USA, Sierra Leone, Thailand, Estonia and everywhere in between, to give them a flavour of the Inn, the Bar and Judiciary of England & Wales. Master Maddams visited our large cohort of members in Malaysia every year since the inauguration of the MITAA by Master Butler-Sloss in 2006, and visited 12 countries across the world on behalf of the Inn, with the Treasurer, with advocacy training delegations and for mooting and debating competitions.
Master Maddams retired to Walberton, West Sussex, in March 2018 and was perhaps busier than ever. He was elected an Honorary Bencher that year and continued to attend the Inn’s social, collegiate, liturgical and musical events. Following a cancer diagnosis earlier this year he underwent treatment, but in September he was transferred to St Wilfred’s Hospice where he received palliative care. His passing was peaceful and his daughter Cecilia and brother Bob were at his side.
There will be a private funeral service in due course. It is expected that a memorial service will be held at the Temple Church and the Inn in the near future, the details of which will be publicised as appropriate. Should anyone wish to make a donation to the St Wilfred’s Hospice in Master Maddams’ memory, details can be found on their website here.
