Pupils

The Further Education Programme is a compulsory part of a pupil's training. You will not be entitled to obtain a final practicing certificate or enter independent practice without having completed these requirements.

Register your pupillage with the BSB and inform the Inn

It is very important that you register your pupillage as soon as possible with the Bar Standards Board, using the registration form which you can download at the link below. The completed form, when signed by your pupil supervisor, should be sent to the BSB. They will not register your pupillage without a signature from your pupil supervisor.

You should also complete the online survey via the second link below, to let the Education department at Inner Temple know the details of your pupillage. This can be done at any point, even if your pupil supervisor is not yet confirmed.

Further Education Programme

The compulsory Advocacy course must be completed in your first six.

The programme is composed of the compulsory Advocacy Course and a Practice Management Course. The latter is no longer a compulsory part of a pupil's training, but attendance is very much encouraged as it provides useful practical information on life at the Bar for those in the early years of their careers.

For those completing their pupillage on the South-Eastern circuit, the courses will be provided by your Inn. Those in pupillage elsewhere will complete the courses provided by the individual circuits themselves; you should contact your circuit administrator for the dates of the next courses.

The Inner Temple Pupils’ Advocacy Training Programme for 2022-2023 in London and the South East will commence in October 2022, taking place as a series of in-person events. Pupils are divided between Course A beginning in October 2022 and Course B beginning in January 2023.

Pupils from both Course A and B will be able to attend the Practice Management Course in January 2023.

The requirement to complete a Forensic Accountancy Course during pupillage (or the first three years of practice) ceased in 2019.
