Outgoing Scholarships

Outgoing Scholarships are available to tenants or employed barristers of each of the Inns up to five years' practice as a barrister (not including pupillage). Scholarships usually start in July and last for three months, but arrangements are necessarily dependent on what is suitable to the host firm. It should be stressed that, whilst offering opportunities for travel within the country to be visited, a Pegasus Scholarship should not be regarded as a holiday. Pegasus scholars are expected by their host firm to play a full part in the practice of the firm. The experience is unlikely to be mutually worthwhile unless the scholar throws themself wholeheartedly into the work.

Applications for 2023 placements will open at 1pm on Monday 3 October, with a deadline of 1pm on Friday 2 December 2022.

2023 Available Placements

Bermuda

Number of placements available: 1

Duration: 6 weeks

Dates: Flexible (Spring/Summer 2023)

Area of law: Commercial

Funding: The Pegasus Scholarship Trust will cover the cost of return flights; and the hosts will provide a stipend (amount TBC) and cover the cost of accommodation

About the placement: The time spent on placement in Bermuda will be with Carey Olsen. The host law firm can often assist with finding accommodation and will cover the costs of this.

Dubai

Number of placements available: 1

Duration: 8-12 weeks

Dates: Flexible 2023 (usually September-December)

Area of law: Commercial

Funding: The Pegasus Scholarship Trust will cover the cost of return flights; and the hosts will provide a stipend (amount TBC).

About the placement: The time spent on the placement is split between a commercial law firm and the DIFC courts. Assistance is provided in finding accommodation and a monthly allowance is provided.

ECHR

Number of placements available: 1

Duration: 3 months

Dates: April - June 2023

Area of law: Human Rights

Funding: The Pegasus Scholarship Trust will cover the cost of return flights/trains and provide a stipend of £400/week.

About the placement: A placement of up to 3 months with the European Court of Human Rights. The successful scholar will be expected to fit in with the court's timetable as they only take scholars on specific start dates.

India

Number of placements available: 1

Duration: 8 weeks

Dates: Flexible

Area of law: Criminal/ Human Rights/ Public Interest

Funding: The Pegasus Scholarship Trust will cover the cost of return flights and the hosts will provide a stipend of INR 17,000/week (approx. £185/week)

About the placement: The placement will be arranged by the Kapila Hingorani Foundation around your legal interests, ideally in the fields of criminal, human rights or other areas of public interest law. It is envisaged that the placement may entail time with both law firms and NGOs engaged in areas of public interest law.

New Zealand

Area of law: Civil/ Crime/ Family/ Commercial

Funding: The Pegasus Scholarship Trust will cover the cost of return flights and the hosts will provide a stipend (amount tbc).

About the placement: Placements are arranged by Crown Office Law, who will place scholars with firms, depending on their interests.

Uganda

Number of placements available: 1

Duration: 3 months

Dates: Flexible

Area of law: Flexible

Funding: The Pegasus Scholarship Trust will cover the cost of return flights and provide a stipend of £400/week.

About the placement:  The Pegasus Scholar would be based in the High Court and Supreme Court in Kampala for three months. You would be under the management of the Chief Justice of Uganda, Justice Bart Magunda Katureebe and supervised by Andrew Khaukha, Technical Advisor to the Judiciary. 

Tasks on which the Pegasus Scholar would be expected to work will be determined by the Chief Justice and the Technical Advisor. Work will likely be a mix of:

• Legal research for judges (in particular the Chief Justice) to assist in determining appeals before the Supreme Court;
• Legal research and drafting of proposals for law reform in Uganda;
• Drafting and analysis of initiatives to improve the running of the justice system in Uganda.

Depending on the Pegasus Scholar's expertise, there may also be opportunities to observe and conduct mediation sessions in the family and commercial courts and/or to work on shaping Uganda's fledgling public defender/legal aid system. The Pegasus Scholar will be able to observe court proceedings in a variety of courts in Kampala (and, subject to agreement, outside Kampala). The Pegasus Scholar may also be able to visit Luzira prison to conduct interviews with detainees.

About the placement: The American Inns of Court Foundation arrange the placement in the United States of America. These scholarships are available to barristers who practise in any kind of law. Successful candidates have the chance to visit the Supreme Court. The host law firms can often assist with finding accommodation.

About the placement: The American Inns of Court Foundation arrange the placement in the United States of America. The NYC placement will be with MoloLamken LLP and will be for barristers who practice commercial law.  The scholar will spend time with the host firm, MoloLamken LLP and with New York federal judges.  The host law firms can often assist with finding accommodation.

Criteria for Pegasus Scholarship Trust

Suitability for the Pegasus Scholarship –

• A high level of commitment to the Pegasus Scholarship;
• The ability to adapt to working with different cultures and workplaces;
• The ability to act as an ambassador for the Pegasus Scholarship, Inns of Court and Bar of England and Wales both during a scholarship and by using the experience on return.

 Intellectual ability –

•  The ability to analyse complex information, identify material issues, exercise sound judgment perceptiveness and good memory;
• Academic achievement and professional practice to date may evidence intellectual ability;
• Intellectual ability may also be demonstrated by evidence of other achievements.

 Motivation –

• Commitment to the Bar of England and Wales (employed or self-employed);
• Commitment to learning about the common law system outside of England and Wales;
• Drive and determination.

Personal Qualities –

•  Integrity and resilience;
• The ability to work flexibly and hard;
